Portrait of Marta: Toonpaint and ArtRage on iPad

Marta B. For JKPP

This is a portrait of Marta B. for Julia Kay’s Portrait Party on Flickr. I used a combination of the Toonpaint app and ArtRage to create this painterly look. Marta’s original photo reminded me of the covers of Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine from the 1980’s. I was also thinking of Wayne Theiboud’s colorful paintings.

Ejmordasky for JKPP: Inkpad on iPad

ejmordasky For JKPP

This is a portrait of Ejmordasky, one of Julia Kay’s Portrait Party’s newest members using vector drawing app Inkpad. I am working on using more linear elements with Inkpad and this was a good exercise for that purpose. In the original photo she is holding a wire twisted into the word “love”. I drew the word using an unfilled stroke in black. Next I used duplicate in place to make a lighter grey version of the word and moved it slightly to give it the look of a highlight. I also used the stroke on the words on the camera. It was a fun portrait to do because all the details kind of took me out of my comfort zone.

Portrait of Juan for Julia Kay’s Portrait Party

Juan For JKPP

This is a portrait of Juan for Julia Kay’s Portrait Party on Flickr. For this portrait I combined the Percolator app with Sketchbook Pro to create the digital collage elements to “paint” on and erase different parts of the picture.

Two Years of Portraits for Julia Kay’s Portrait Party

Julia Kay with Balloon Hat
Portrait of Julia Kay in Balloon Hat-Pencil on Paper

March 11th was my two year anniversary of joining Julia Kay’s Portrait Party. I completed 200 portraits using pencil on paper, iPhone, and numerous iPad apps, including ArtRage, Brushes, Inkpad, and Sketchbook Pro. It was a really great opportunity for me to experiment with the apps with each new portrait and try to get each portrait to look different. The group has grown to over 600 artists using a wide variety of media, from traditional oil paints to Etch-a-Sketch, name labels and a crochet quilt. Since joining I’ve met and drawn some of the members. There are meet ups going on all over the world and if I could I would love to hop on a plane and join them. Several of the members have published books of their portraits.

My last three portraits were pretty low tech, pencil on paper, but I want to stretch out and try some acrylic and pastel versions, along with more iPad art. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the members are doing and look forward to the day when a meet up come to my neck of the woods.

Meridiculous for JKPP: Inkpad on iPad

Meridiculous For JKPP

I am approaching my two year anniversary of being a member of Julia Kay’s Portrait Party on Flickr this month. I am trying to get to 200 portraits before the anniversary and I only have about six to go to reach my goal.

Portrait of Kate Two Ways: Percolated and Toonpainted

Percolated Kate For JKPP

Kate just joined Julia Kay’s Portrait Party and I wanted to try the Percolator app on her portrait. First I used Toonpaint on her original photo and then “percolated” that version. Next I imported that picture into ArtRage to add the oil paint texture.

I also worked on another portrait of Kate from a black and white photo. I used the Toonpaint App and added color to the picture. Next I imported that into ArtRage to give it more of an thick oil painted look.

Congratulations to Julia Kay’s Portrait Party on 20,000 Portraits!

Jane Sherwood For jKPP

This week I was the lucky artist to submit the 20,000th portrait to Julia Kay’s Portrait Party on Flickr (and my 188th portrait). This is a portrait of Jane Sherwood and her daughter created using ArtRage on the iPad. I was experimenting with using different brushstrokes and blocking out the color using larger shapes. I had watched an ArtRage tutorial on line and was trying some of the things the artist demonstrated. The challenge for me is that I am used to using acrylics and know how to thin the paint using mediums, but in ArtRage I start out with my “paint” a little too thick and have to find the right formulation. I also used the pencil brush for the thin lines and the pastel brush for scumbling the colors.

Hopeful Gratitude (and her cat) For JKPP

hopeful gratitude for JKPP

This is an iPad painting of Hopeful Gratitude for Julia Kay’s Portrait Party using Sketchbook Pro and ArtRage. A new discussion thread has started with portraits that include cats, so I want to start a few paintings to fit into that category. Sadly, I don’t have a cat to pose with (i’m allergic) but maybe someone can let me borrow one for a picture.

Portrait of Jesseca: Sketchbook Pro and ArtRage on iPad

Jesseca For JKPP

This is a portrait for Julia Kay’s Portrait Party on Flickr. There have been a lot of new members lately and I’m trying to catch up on some portraits. I’ve been experimenting with the combination of Sketchbook Pro and ArtRage lately. I like to use Sketchbook Pro first and then import the picture into ArtRage to add various textures and give it a more painterly feel. I recently started using the varnish setting in the oil brush and using it on a separate layer to add brushstrokes to the picture. It doesn’t seem to get muddy working that way. I also like the way it works with the watercolor paper surface, the brushstrokes seem to sit on the surface a little differently than the way it works with the canvas setting.
