Tutorial: Creating a Steampunk Selfie

Steampunk Selfie

A couple weeks ago I went to the International Steampunk City in Morristown, New Jersey. I met a lot of amazing people and got some great pictures, which I will be posting soon. Since this was my first Steampunk event I did not have the right accoutrements but decided to improvise with some things I had around the house. I took a Selfie at the event and decided to give it a more steampunked look. First I used MoreBeaute2 to smooth out my skin (it’s cheaper than plastic surgery).

Next I used Picgrunger to give it a canvas texture.

Finally I used an app called Steampunk PhotoTada to add the embellishments around the border and the cog texture

Goodbye Lou Reed

No lie, I’ve been listening to Lou Reed’s Transformer for the last week while painting and it was in my CD player when I found out that he had died over the weekend. Lou Reed was one of my favorite artists since my record store years. I’ve had many great memories over the years, like seeing him at the Matisse show at the MOMA in the 90’s, seeing “Songs for Drella” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and seeing him onstage with David Bowie performing “White Light, White Heat”.

I added this photo of myself wearing my Lou Reed t-shirt to Julia Kay’s Portrait Party a couple of years ago and have had several portraits done with Lou’s image looking up at me.

I loved his voice. I loved the way he was such a presence in New York City. I wish I could have seen him sing one last time.

Portrait of Olivia: Inkpad and Artrage on iPad

This is a portrait of Olivia for Julia Kay’s Portrait Party on Flickr. I am approaching 250 portraits for this group. I love to work on these portraits when I’ve run out of inspiration to other artwork. There are over 600 hundred me,hers now so I’ve got a lot of catching up to do!

Mix Tape Masterpiece

I usually don’t use the Daily Prompt for inspiration for my posts, but this one seemed like fun. While digging through my CDs (yes, I still have CDs) I found this compilation I made a while back. At one time I think I had all of these songs on vinyl or tape. Here are some other songs I would add to my mix tape in no particular order:

Velvet Underground featuring Nico – I’ll be your Mirror

David Bowie – Heroes

Robyn Hitchcock – So you think you’re in Love

Clash – Train in Vain

The Replacements – Kiss me on the Bus

Kinks – Shangri La

Strangler – Skin Deep

Nick Drake – Pink Moon

Iggy Pop – Passenger

The Pretenders – Cuban Slide

The Fratelli’s – Chelsea Dagger

If you have any song suggestions please add them in the comments.

First Friday in Nyack

Antique Store in Nyack

Last night we went to Nyack for their First Friday night. I took along my younger studio assistant to expose him to different types of art. We started with a quick visit to the beautiful Hopper House where there was a group show of paintings. The Hopper House set the tone for the night for me, and as we walked around town I couldn’t help but think of Edward Hopper’s paintings. Next we went to the restaurant Johnny Cakes where we saw a wonderful exhibit featuring art by Janet Lennon and photos by Bob Lynn. We had a “Nighthawks” moment as we sat at the counter and had a strawberry milkshake and coffee. At that point I realized I had left my iPhone in the car so I wasn’t able to take any pictures. After a quick trip back to the car we walked along the Main Street and visited some of the other shops. We came upon a candy store where they were blasting the Tom Tom Club’s song “Genius of Love” and we danced around the jars of candy (my young studio assistant loves to dance even when it might seem inappropriate). There was an artist live painting in the window of the store and artwork hanging throughout the store. Next we walked past a dance studio where a young, dark haired gentlemen was ballroom dancing with a woman in a tight grey dress while her husband/boyfriend stood by looking a little annoyed. Nyack at night seemed magical as we walked past large Victorian houses, antique stores and little candle lit cafes.
