Dr. Sketchy’s Black Dahlia Session

Dr. Sketchy’s “the black dahlia”

Last Saturday I went to the Black Dahlia themed Dr. Sketchy’s at Paul Booth’s Last Rites Gallery in New York City.  This was a very unique drawing session because we were drawing in the Gallery itself amongst the paintings and sculptures from the current exhibition “13th Hour”. The artwork being exhibited really set the tone for the drawing session.  The backdrop for the model was a large Geiger painting and  I was sitting right under a Travis Louie painting.

Hipstamatic on iPhone

Taken while I was walking to the Last Rites Gallery for the Dr. Sketchy’s Black Dahlia session. This was a “happy accident” because I set the camera on random mode and shot quickly.

Hipstamatic Dali Dream Canvas and Picture Show

Right now I’m loving the combination of the Hipstamatic Dali Dream Canvas and Picture Show.   I like to use the Picture Show filters set on Random because I like the element of surprise and I’m not using the same filters over and over again.

Julia Kay @ Portrait Party meetup in NYC

Pencil on paper

Last  month I was very fortunate to participate in Julia Kay’s Portrait Party Meet Up at the High Line in New York.   When I first joined  Julia’s Portrait Party group on Flickr I would never have guessed that I would be meeting and drawing with so many interesting artists from all around the world.  This meet up coincided with the Mobile Art Conference the weekend before so it was a wonderful way to wind down after all the Iamda activity.  We met at the High Line Park near the Chelsea Market and the weather was unseasonably warm that day.  We sat at the tables drawing each other while passer by’s stopped to see what what we were doing.  I chose to work mainly in pencil that day but everyone used a variety of materials, from watercolor, sharpie, iPhone and iPad.  There was a lot of drawings and photos from that day and they can be seen here on the discussion for the Portrait Party.  Julia Kay’s Portrait Party pool and discussions can be seen here on Flickr.
