Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The Rebels.

Self portrait with iPad

Self portrait from the day the first iPad came out

I just saw the Steve Jobs movie and I am totally inspired! I can easily say that without really knowing it at the time, Steve Jobs really influenced the direction of my art over the past several years. My discovery of “Mobile Art” and the community on Flickr changed the way I make and exhibit my art. The iPod and iPhone introduced me to the medium but the iPad completely changed my creative process. If anyone had told me 20 years ago that I would be making art with light and pixels and sharing it with people all over the world I would never have believed them. I’ve met some amazing artists because of the mobile community and have been incredibly lucky to meet a lot of them IRL (in real life).

Here are two of the quotes that inspire me the most:

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The trouble-makers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently…they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

When you grow up you tend to get told that the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life and try not to bash into the walls too much…that’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact—everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you…shake off this erroneous notion that life is there and you’re just going to live in it versus make your mark upon it. Once you learn that, you will never be the same again.

I’ve known people that would say “it is what it is” but I think that is a very pessimist view. Don’t accept the Status Quo. Go out and make something, whether it be art or something functional, that didn’t exist before. Move out of your comfort zone. Be prepared to fail and make some really bad art. But always remember that creativity is boundless and limitless. Today is the day that you will begin to write your own story.
