Retro Destination: Bischoff’s in Teaneck, New Jersey

Retro Destination: Bischoff's

We stopped at Bischoff’s recently for coffee and (of course) ice cream sundaes. Bischoff’s has been around since 1934 and has not changed much over the years. It is one of the last real ice cream parlors in this area with a counter in the front room and booths in the back. In addition to ice cream Bischoff’s has a wide assortment of candy. When we were kids my mom would buy our chocolate Easter bunnies and eggs for our baskets and my dad would buy candy fruit slices and nuts for Thanksgiving. During this visit there was a large assortment of Valentine’s Day candy.

I have great memories of eating at Bischoff’s during high school where some of my friends worked at the time. One visit during college that I will always remember was after seeing the movie Blue Velvet at the theater down the street and discussing the movie at length over ice cream. At one time I worked down the street and I would have an ice cream cone for lunch when I was low on cash. Now we go to Bischoff’s to celebrate special occasions or good report cards.
